I am lying here right now talking to you and chewing on this bone my owner gave me today.   I am so tired but happy.   There used to be a time when I didn’t know what to do with myself.   I barked a lot, chased my tail and ate stuff around the house.   The kids were always yelling that I had torn up some new toy.   How was I supposed to know that their toys weren’t mine? They looked similar.   I noticed my owner started putting me outside a lot more often, and I thought it was maybe the nice weather and fresh air, but I quickly found I didn’t have much to do outside either…..so, I had to make games for myself.   I tried to see how many holes I could dig in an hour, how many howls it took before my owner came back outside, and I even tried to figure out how to make the water come out of the hose like it did for my owner.   One time I did, and my owner did not look pleased when I was wet and covered in mud from the holes I had been digging.

BAD DOG - My friend Jack

What was a cute Lab pup like myself supposed to do? I couldn’t figure my people out.   If I moped around the house, they thought I was sad and would try to play with me.   Once I got excited and hyper because they were playing with me, they got upset I accidentally tugged the toys too hard or jumped up on them.   Then they wouldn’t play anymore.

I started licking my feet all the time.   At first it felt really good, and it filled up my time during the day.   I could start and stop whenever I wanted to, but then one day I noticed I licked all the time.   I couldn’t really help myself anymore.    I actually made a sore on my foot which got me a trip the vet.   Unlike some other dogs I know, I like my vet because he always has goodies to give me.

After that vet visit, I don’t know what happened exactly, but I really liked the things my owner started doing.   First, I couldn’t find any of the kids’ toys anymore that I liked to play with.   They disappeared, but instead I had a lot more chew toys like hard bones and some kind of rubber toy stuffed full of peanut butter.   YUM! Second, I got to go on lots more walks.   This was great for me.   My owner and the kids started walking me every single day.   I enjoyed the walks a lot, and I took a nice nap when we got home.   I stopped licking my feet so much, and I didn’t feel like digging those holes anymore.   Guess what? The kids started to play with me again, and I got to play everyday with special toys.   Plus, my owner started taking me to some place every week where I learned new things and got a lot more goodies.   I think I heard someone say something like ‘obedience class.’ I had so many things to do now that I just didn’t feel like chasing my tail or barking as much.   I was tired each night and went to bed excited about the next day.   The best part, my family is spending more time with everyday, and I really like that.   I even heard my owner say something about swimming in the summer.   I’m not sure what that is, but I heard my name Zoey and swimming together, so whatever it is, it will be great because my owner will be there.

So, if you have a dog just like me who seems to be too excited or does a lot of things you don’t like, maybe you need to do more activities with it. We dogs love to spend time with you, and we love to do things!
