Easy Walk Harness
Zoey
Dog
I’ve
got this new best friend who moved in next door to
me. She’s
black and white and got the neatest eyes. They’re bright blue,
almost crystal looking. Before Maya, I had
never seen a dog like that before.
Maya loves life so much! She runs and plays, and she doesn’t
bark too much.
Instead, she whines and yodels in this high-pitched
voice. We get
to play together pretty often, and we have the best
time.
Her owner doesn’t take her on too many walks, so we usually
get together to play in the backyard. One play day, Maya told me
she was kind of jealous that I get to go on walks with my
owner everyday.
Hers won’t ever take her anywhere. It seems that Maya pulled
really badly on the leash and dragged her owner
everywhere. He
had to take her in the car the other day, and I got to see
first hand how badly she pulled on the leash, almost walking
on hind legs.
Why not just not pull on the leash, I thought? It seemed
like an obvious answer, but one day when my kids were
watching a television show, I ran to the screen and barked
back and forth between the television and the
kids. “Yeah,
yeah. They look
like Maya, “ said the older boy. I sat there and watched
the whole program with the kids. There were lots of Mayas
in the program, and it was very icy and snowy wherever they
were. The dogs
were all connected to each other and pulled a small sled and
person behind them. They called them ‘sled
dogs.’
The next day I told Maya I had seen dogs like her on
television, that the program had called them ‘sled
dogs.’ She gave
me a sheepish grin and said, “Of course I’m a sled
dog. I’m a
husky!” I found out that’s why she had a hard time not
pulling on the leash when on a walk. Huskies love to run, and
they are used to running out in front of
someone.
During one of our play sessions, my owner gave Maya’s owner
the name of our dog trainer. She told him that she
thought he could help out with Maya’s pulling and to give
him a call.
A few weeks had passed without me getting to play too much
with Maya.
School was starting again after a long hot summer, and
everyone was very busy. My owner had taken me for
a walk down to the bus stop to see the kids off that
morning, and I was startled to see Maya a short distance
away. I had
never seen her on a walk before, let alone so
calm.
After the kids were on the bus and pulling away, my owner
caught up with Maya and her owner. Maya was wearing something
around her chest for the walk.
“I see you got a harness,” my owner said.
“It’s not just any harness,“ Maya’s owner
said. “It’s
a special kind of harness called an Easy Walk
harness. It
helps Maya learn not to pull so hard.”
Maya looked so happy that I got caught up in playing with
her and missed some of what they were saying, but I guess
the trainer really helped out. He explained that since
Maya was a sled dog, it was only natural for her to want to
pull. This
special harness helped encourage her not to pull
anymore. I
could tell it was doing its job well, and Maya was so
excited to be out walking with her owner. He hadn’t taken her
walking in well over 6 months until getting this harness and
talking to the trainer. He thanked my owner and
said we should have another play date soon, but I suspect
we’ll be taking some walks together too, especially now that
Maya has her special harness and is walking
better. I’m
really looking forward to that!
