Head Halters

Zoey Dog

While out on my daily walk this morning, I was enjoying myself a great deal.  It’s spring time, and the flowers are beginning to emerge.  I love to eat the new blades of grass.  The ones in the morning are the best too.  The smells are freshest early in the day, and a lot of my doggie friends are out walking at this time too.  I can smell their little footprints all over the place, and I’m always excited when my owner and I catch up to them.

Most of the time, I see Maggie the little terrier, who loves to look for squirrels and yip in joy when she sees them.  I also see Bo, the old, squatty dog who waddles his way around the neighborhood.  My favorite dog is kind of like me.  I’m a lab, and Jordan is a Golden.  We’re about the same age, so we have a lot in common with each other.  Normally, Jordan and I and my owners cross paths and walk together for a while, so we get to see each other most every day.   Head Halter

Today, my owner and I ran across Jordan and her owner about a block from my house.  I spied her a distance away, and she looked different than normal.  There was something on her head, but I wasn’t sure what.  I looked up at my owner, and she looked down at me and smiled.  “We’re almost to them, Zoey,” she said.

As we got within a closer distance to them, I barked out to Jordan .  She turned and looked at me, and now I could tell that she had something that ran across her nose.  What on earth was that? The leash wasn’t attached to her collar like it usually was.  Instead, the leash was coming from under her mouth and was attached to this piece on her nose.  This wasn’t like any collar I had seen before.

“Is Jordan wearing a muzzle?“ asked my owner.

“No, this is a special kind of collar called a head halter,“ said Jordan ’s owner.  “It works kind of like a bridle on a horse, so I can control Jordan ’s head.”

They continued on a bit as we walked along.  I will say that Jordan was walking  better than normal.  She was staying right with her owner now.  Jordan sometimes did have a tendency to pull him along down the street.  Usually, Jordan and I walked side by side while we were together, but I had definitely seen her get excited and pull him too.

As I tried to figure this head halter thing out, and I looked at Jordan ’s face, I could hear them talk about how much more control it gave him and how it helped him to walk Jordan .  Plus, Jordan was being walked even more now than ever before because his wife and older kids could even walk her; whereas, before the head halter, only he could walk Jordan .

I nuzzled towards Jordan and whispered in her ear and asked how she liked this new weird piece of equipment.  “I wasn’t sure at first,” she said, but “now everyone walks me, and I get to go several times a day.”

I think Jordan liked best that more members of the family now spent time walking her.  She seemed to like it okay, and it didn’t look too bad to me either after I learned more about it.  Anything that got you more walks couldn’t be half bad, after all.
