Putting on
Weight
Zoey
Dog
I
have noticed a strange thing about you owners. If it gets a
little, tiny bit cold outside, you won’t walk any of us
dogs! Instead, you send us out to do our business all alone
in the cold, and really we’d love to get our heart pumping
and do some walking and exercise like we do in the warmer
weather. You probably know that most of us dogs can take the
cold a little better than you…unless you are
like Peanut the Chihuahua. She lives down the
street from me, and I can hear her teeth chatter all the
time. She wears one of those fluffy and colorful wraps
around her body. But me, I’m a Lab, and we’re bred to handle
the weather and fearlessly jump into open waters, even if
they’re colder than I might like.
You people like sitting
inside in the warm heat of the home.
I like it too, but you
know what one of the side effects is of no exercise? I think
you do because I always see my owner trying to squeeze into
her too small jeans come February.
We put on weight
too!
The other day I caught a glimpse of myself in
the hallway mirror, and I rushed the mirror
barking.
I did not recognize
myself until the other dog didn’t seem to be doing too
much.
Who was that dog in
the mirror? She looked a little plumper than I remembered
my svelte self looking.
When I sat down, I had
rolls that edged out across and over my
hips.
Fat
rolls!
I had noticed that it
was getting harder to get up the stairs, and it took me
longer to do it than usual.
I used to be able to
beat the kids up or down the stairs and play the game of
“Can you get past me?” Now, I was lucky if I got there at
the same time as them.
Plus, when I wanted to
go lie down in my usual comfy spot by the fire, the bed felt
tighter than I recalled.
I dug my nose into the
comforter to see if I had accidentally misplaced any toys
within the bed’s fold that could be squeezing me
out.
I got up, spun around,
dug the blanket all up, and there was nothing
there.
It was only my body that
was squeezing me out.
Things seemed to change
the day after my owner had to help me get into the car to go
for a ride.
I tried to get in, but I
just couldn’t do it anymore.
I heard a neighbor
chuckle and ask my owner what she had been feeding me
lately.
I think my owner
realized that day that I wasn’t as slim as
normal.
Now, my weight was
affected more than just me.
I noticed she gave me
just a little less kibble in my dinner, but she gave me some
new things too: she added something called
vegetables.
I loved the carrots and
green beans the most.
They tasted good and
were a nice addition to my dinner.
I guess they don’t add
as many calories to my dinner but still help me feel
full.
The kids started playing
more ball in the house.
They sat at the end of
the hallway and threw those toys to the very opposite
end.
I got a real workout
with that.
The best part, my owner
pulled her super-duper heavy sweater and coat out of the
closet and took me walking everyday.
Some days the walks were
a little shorter, but she did it just like normal times in
the summer.
I started to be able to
fit into my bed better, and the kids couldn’t believe it
when I beat them to the top of the stairs
again.
I felt like I had more
energy to do stuff.
And, you know what, my
owner fits in her jeans again too! I caught her smiling
softly the other day, and she said, “Zoey, we sure do look
and feel good!”
